Murphy N.C. 15 minutes west. Are some very good restaurants, lots of shops (we recommend the Curiosity Shoppe for books and gifts, and the Daily Grind for wine, coffee shop, and great sandwiches and salads.  We also recommend ShoeBooties (make reservations) and an upscale steak house, The Chop House, (make reservations).

Asheville N.C. two hours east. (Biltmore Mansion) America’s Largest Estate and grounds and some excellent shopping.  While in Asheville—we recommend 12 Bones Rib House and Tupelo Honey’s. The downtown area has many great restaurants catering to all tastes and backgrounds.  There are multiple bakeries and candy (chocolate) shops.

Cherokee N.C. 1 hr. east. –Great history of American Indian Heritage museums and shops and Harrah’s Casino.

Waynesville N.C. 1 hr. 30 minutes east.  If you like to eat and go to historic downtown areas, this is great.  There are plenty of shops.  It’s not likely you can browse through all of them in one day.  There is a free parking garage one block off of Main Street to the west (look for signs). There is a bakery on Main Street that is out of this world but they are closed on Sunday and Monday. One bakery and coffee shop has cakes brought in weekly from NYC by the owner and some of the cakes are 25+lbs in weight.  Try the Sweet Onion for some above average and well portioned food. There is an old general store, Mast General Store, that has a basement full of old style candy and gifts.

John C. Campbell Folk School 10 minutes south of Murphy.  This is out Hwy 64.  There are free weekend concerts and craft fairs.  This is where items are made the old fashioned way, not a craft show where things are bought then brought in.  There are many famous musical artists that come here and perform.
